The Archiu Generau d’Aran, the official historical archive of the Val d’Aran, is part of the network of archives maintained by the Catalan Government, the Generalitat. The facility was first opened on 7 November, 1998. Since its establishment, it has been managed by the Conselh Generau d’Aran. The archive regularly receives all the official records of the Conselh Generau d’Aran, and, by agreement, documents from other public and private institutions, as well as those of private individuals or organisations that wish to deposit them or donate them to the archive.
The Archiu Generau’s mission is to ensure that records are preserved in good condition, and to make them accessible to users via a system of descriptive tools, so that they can become a means to study and raise the profile of the Val d’Aran’s documentary heritage. The Archive holds documents from the 14th century to the 21st. The collection can accessed online via the website of the Generalitat’s Department of Culture. It can also be accessed in person via the Archive’s own computer terminals.
The Archive is housed in the Çò d’Ademà, a historical residence better known as the Casa deth Senhor d’Arròs. The house was built by Francisco Ademà Subirà in 1820, and consists of a reading and user support room; four repository rooms with cabinets, wall shelves and file shelving, a reception room and a document disinfection room.
